Georgios Masouras had a memorable Bundesliga debut for VfL Bochum, scoring a quickfire brace in a 2-0 victory over Borussia Dortmund in the Ruhr derby. The win kept Bochum's slim survival hopes alive, as they became the only team in the three-point-per-win era to remain in the league despite earning fewer than 12 points after 21 rounds.
Although Bochum entered the match at the bottom of the table, they started with determination. Masouras made an immediate impact, winning a corner and forcing Dortmund goalkeeper Gregor Kobel into an early save. His persistence paid off in the 32nd minute when he scored the opening goal. A well-timed pass from Philipp Hofmann found Masouras at the back post, where he finished with ease to give Bochum the lead.
Less than two minutes later, Masouras doubled his tally. Pressing Dortmund defender Niklas Süle, he capitalized on a poor back pass and calmly slotted the ball past Kobel to make it 2-0. This lead was well-deserved, although a cautionary note remained due to Bochum's previous 4-2 defeat from the same position in the reverse fixture.
Dortmund failed to create much danger in the first half, and Bochum could have added to their lead had Serhou Guirassy been more composed when he fired over the bar just before halftime. Guirassy had another opportunity early in the second half but was thwarted by a timely interception. Julian Brandt also struggled, hitting a free-kick straight into the Bochum wall.
The expected Dortmund comeback never materialized. Gerrit Holtmann came close to extending Bochum's lead with a shot just over the bar. Masouras was also inches away from completing a hat-trick. A giveaway from Dortmund's Julien Duranville allowed Masouras to embark on a solo run, but despite two strong attempts, Kobel saved the first, and Masouras' third hit the side netting.
Dortmund, coming off a midweek 3-0 win over Sporting CP, lacked creativity and struggled to break down Bochum's defense. The victory lifted Bochum off the bottom of the table, offering them a glimmer of hope for survival. Masouras' stellar performance was a highlight, as he single-handedly handed Dortmund their fifth loss in seven league games.
