Atalanta BC played out a goalless draw with Cagliari in Serie A, marking the first draw between the two sides since January 2013. The game began slowly, with Atalanta's heavily rotated squad moving the ball well but struggling to break down Cagliari's defense. Despite Atalanta's dominance in possession, there were few clear-cut chances. Matteo Ruggeri and Stefan Posch kept Cagliari's Roberto Piccoli at bay, preventing any significant threats.
The first shot on goal came just before the half-hour mark when Mateo Retegui's free-kick was deflected wide by a Cagliari defender. Lazar Samardžić had the first shot on target of the match shortly after, but Cagliari goalkeeper Elia Caprile managed to hold on to the strike. Atalanta’s Rafael Tolói came close with a shot that sailed over the crossbar as the first half drew to a close.
Cagliari came out more assertive after the break, with Gian Piero Gasperini responding by making two substitutions. Atalanta's defense held firm, and while Cagliari’s Marco Brescianini thought he had scored, the goal was ruled out due to a foul by Stefan Posch on Caprile as he attempted to collect the ball. I Rossoblù created several opportunities, with Florinel Coman and Nadir Zortea both having shots blocked after picking up second balls from crosses into the box.
Atalanta pushed for a late victory, but their efforts fell short. Yerry Mina deflected Charles De Ketelaere's shot just wide of the goal, and Vanja Vlahović’s effort was saved by Caprile. Mario Pašalić also had a chance that narrowly missed the post, but the match ultimately ended in a draw.
This result meant that Atalanta extended their poor form, with just one win from their last six games in all competitions. Heading into their crucial match against Club Brugge on Tuesday, they risk falling further behind in the Serie A title race, with Napoli and Inter Milan ahead of them. Cagliari, meanwhile, avoided defeat for the third time in their last four away matches, moving five points clear of the relegation zone for the time being.
